Disrupt Your Job Search

Welcome to Disrupt Your Narrative

To disrupt your narrative means to challenge or interrupt the established story or framework that you have created about yourself, your life, or a particular situation. It involves questioning and reevaluating the assumptions, beliefs, and patterns that shape your understanding of yourself and the world around you.

Each Wednesday, I release a newsletter outlining one of the most impactful ways you can disrupt your narrative and begin taking control of your life.

What Exactly Does it Mean to Disrupt Your Job Search?

If you are applying for jobs and 90% of applicants have a master’s degree while you do not, don’t apply to that job. If you are applying for that job on LinkedIn and don’t have LinkedIn premium, that is the first issue to work through (because you don’t know that 90% of applicants haev a master’s).

I will be the first to say that the “traditional” way of applying for jobs - that being the submission of an application to something you found on a job board/site, is basically dead. I say basically because a very slim percentage of people actually do get GOOD jobs that way. For jobs of any substance and great benefits, the method is too oversaturated. I see roles on LinkedIn with 250 applications in a matter of days, and as much as I like to think I’m awesome, chances are there are AT LEAST a few equally awesome candidates (professionally awesome, not generally awesome).

Basically, disrupting our job search is simply not applying the same way everyone else is. But here, I will speak to how to at least make the ‘normal’ way more effective.

How Can You Disrupt Your Job Search?

I am going to keep this incredibly high-level, because these are things I talk about in coaching sessions. And I have to have something I talk about in coaching sessions.

  1. IF you’re going to apply to jobs the traditional way, 3 things are crucial:

    a. Have a premium feature wherever you’re applying to ensure you have competitor insights. Again, if the competitors have desired certifications and a master’s while you do not, perhaps be more efficient with your time and apply to something else.

    b. Tailored resume and cover letter every time: Many companies use algorithms to automatically vet resumes. If yours doesn’t line up with skills in the job description, it may be automatically rejected. If it gets through, you may be questioned for not including the relevant skills initially.

    c. Quality over quantity: Flying through 100 easy applies in one day makes no sense. Say you get 10 interviews doing this, that is 10%. And they’re probably going to all be low quality. OR you could be incredibly intentional and apply to 10 companies that really align with your values and make that known in your cover letter, allow each resume to show how your values and skills align. Say you apply for 10 and get 1 interview. Still 10%, but it’s a very intentional and quality interview.

Why It’s Essential:

While disrupting your job search and stepping outside your comfort zone may initially seem daunting, the potential rewards in terms of personal development, career growth, and unique opportunities make it an essential approach to consider. Just be sure to balance your disruptive strategies with a thoughtful and well-researched plan to maximize your chances of success.

Like I have said before, I am a promoter of CALCULATED risks. A calculated risk is kind of like firing from the hip, it may be a bit of a gamble, but you can still see the target and do your best to aim.
